On January 23, 2020, a beautiful day in Honolulu, Hawaii was interrupted by a tragic event near Diamond Head. A man stabbed an old lady who was believed to be his landlord. The man identified as Jerry Hanel is the suspect of the murder of three including two HPD police officers.

     After the stabbing Jerry Hanel allegedly shot and killed two police officers Tiffany Enriquez and Kaulike Kalama who died in the line of duty serving and protecting the community. After the gunfire between Hanel and the officers, Hanel allegedly set his home on fire in which six other homes were also burned. Hanel and Lois Ann Cain, the landlord, both are believed to have died in the burning house.

     The state is deeply saddened to hear about the deaths of its two young officers and is proud of the service that they have brought to the community. Enriquez was a mom of three including 17-year-old Jazmyn who explained that her mom was and will always be her hero. She asks that she remembers this day as not a tragedy, but the day that God received two beautiful angels in heaven. Jazmyn says her mom, a former air force veteran, will live through the legacy she’s left behind forever.

     Officer Kaulike Kalama who was 34 years old was the second officer killed in the line of duty. He leaves behind his wife and his teenage son who loved and respected him dearly. Before he was fatally shot Kalama served nine years in HPD. Many believed that it was Kalamas destiny to serve during his lifetime. He’s described as a great husband, father, officer, and friends who always felt the duty to serve his community. Our condolences go out to the families of these fallen officers.
