In this year’s high school wrestling season, the Saint Louis wrestling team, led by head coach KJ Pascua, secured second place in the Hawaii state wrestling championship. This achievement showcases the athletes’ talents and the program’s potential.
Head coach Pascua emphasizes, “He tries his best to make practice challenging, fun, and rewarding. Hopefully, the students will leave excited for the upcoming season and with a passion for the sport.”
Wrestling demands dedication and mental toughness. State Champion in the 150-pound weight class Kaihi Cobb-Adams shared, “How I perform mentally is by getting myself into a positive mindset and just telling myself I can do it each time and constantly telling myself I will win.” The wrestlers’ commitment to training instills discipline and perseverance beyond the mat.
The team’s success is attributed to the strong bond they share as a team. Two-time state champion Hunter Berger reflects, “The most challenging part was seeing some of my brothers fall and lose some of their matches, but it’s just important to stay positive and mental.” The unity within the team fuels their drive for success.
The athletes draw strength from each other, fostering a supportive environment. Cobb-Adams highlights, “The most defining moment for the team was when we would all cheer each other on; we would always cheer everybody on because we want to win, and we’re all in it together.” Despite not achieving first place, the team’s performance marks a significant milestone for the program.
Coach Pascua’s dedication to coaching at Saint Louis stems from his love for wrestling and the students. He emphasizes, “I continue to coach at Saint Louis because I love wrestling, and I look forward to meeting students that continue to come out.” The team’s accomplishments this season serve as a testament to their potential and determination for future success.
