Transportation for the People by the People
January 29, 2018
It’s the twentieth century and economies are busier than ever producing for their growing populations. More people are on the roads causing an increased accident rate which is driving the elderly back into their homes. I believe the elderly deserve the ability to go out into the world just as the younger generations. That is why the retired should have the right to free public transportation.
The retired generation has dedicated their lives to the United States of America. Their taxes and relentless effort of bettering the economy should leave some benefits for them now that they are too old to work. Although some people might believe that social security and Medicare is enough. However, how are elderly supposed to get groceries without the help of family or friends? That is why companies have been establishing rideshare businesses for the elderly but at a cost. This might be fair if the person decides to go on a short trip but what if they want to take a drive and see the beautiful land around them. The amount can be alarmingly high especially for someone depending on social security. If the United States allows elderly to get free public transportation, for example, buses, it would allow them to not have to rely on anyone for transportation or worry about the cost of a rideshare program. Other agree as well, Cbirkas from debate.org states, “Elderly like visiting their grandchildren or children or at least going somewhere, and they are the people with the most time on their hands so they would be using the bus a lot. Why should they have to pay money to get to the store that’s only about a mile away?” With free transportation, the elderly would be able to travel and enjoy what they have worked their whole life for. Wouldn’t you want to be able to do the same when you retire?
