Water Pollution

Prince Solomon, Writer

There are many environmental issues going around the world nowadays. Each one of these issues are important and should be put into the light so everyone is aware. The one environmental issue that I will be touching face with today is water pollution.

Water pollution is contaminated water, it’s water that was once clean that became intoxicated. This issue occurs when harmful substances contaminate a body of water like a stream, lake, river, sea, or ocean. It’s the degradation of the purity of water or the water quality.

The act of water pollution can come in many ways and forms. Water pollution can occur from our sewage system and waste. Our sewage lines are developed to flush straight into the ocean which pollutes our water. Another way water pollution can occur is through oil spills and oil pollution. Large cargo ships can carry thousands of gallons of oil and could potentially spill in the water, thus contaminating it. Gasoline and oil drip from millions of cars each day and from factories to the cities. It had been estimated that one million tons of oil a year make it back to marine environments. In addition,  water can also be polluted by radiation. Radiation can be caused by nuclear power plants, hospitals that use radioactive materials for research and medicine, and the production and testing of military weapons.

It’s not just the big oil spills and companies that are to blame for this water pollution. We all take some part of it. So if you truly want to save marine life and make a stop from further water damage. Here are some things you can do to do your part.

  • Reduce your plastic consumption and recycle plastic when you can
  • Properly dispose of chemical cleaners, oils, and non-biodegradable items
  • Stay on top of maintaining the shape of your car so it doesn’t leak

Water pollution is bad for our environment and bad for our marine life. These problems need to be fixed as soon as possible in order to preserve the beautiful marine life we have now before it’s too late.
