When social barriers fall and hearts open, students at the Junior Emmaus Retreat form lasting friendships and deepen their shared faith. Saint Louis School retreats focus on faith-related issues, inspiring a sense of connection with others and God.
“The retreat is all about the journey, allowing young men to discover where they are on their path,” emphasizes Brother Brandon Alana, Associate Director of Campus Ministry. “Heading towards Emmaus, they understand who is journeying with them, including how God is a part of all of that.”
At this year’s Emmaus retreat, moments of vulnerability and trust-building created a powerful sense of brotherhood, offering an unforgettable experience. Students discovered shared values that fostered a supportive atmosphere. “I felt more open to sharing my thoughts because we learned the values we have in common,” notes Junior participant Caide Felipo. “I feel more inclined to talk about things I previously avoided.” This openness led to meaningful conversations and stronger connections.
The retreat cultivates trust and brotherhood through activities and personal reflections. “This retreat fostered a sense of brotherhood by how open and vulnerable we became with each other,” shares Felipo. “Trust exercises required us to rely on the whole group to achieve our goals.” Forming connections through faith is central to the retreat’s theme.
Group leaders play a crucial role by sharing personal experiences and insights. “Group leaders contribute to the juniors’ faith development by sharing experiences,” says Senior and Retreat Leader Cash Acorda. “The leaders I went with had attended the Emmaus Junior retreat before and shared their experiences, showing how their faith has grown.” These stories provide relatable examples of faith in action, inspiring juniors to reflect on their own spiritual journeys.
As the retreat concluded, it was clear the journey profoundly impacted each participant. Through openness and relatable experiences, students discovered the strength of brotherhood and the importance of faith. “The retreat inspired me to always put God first, uphold my parents, and try to make a difference,” noted Felipo. By embracing their shared journey towards Emmaus, students left with a renewed sense of purpose, ready to carry the lessons of trust and faith into their everyday lives.
