From underdogs to contenders, the Saint Louis football team, led by a trio of standout athletes, aims to bring home the glory with a new mindset.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Tupu Alualu, the Crusader football team has undergone a cultural transformation. Alualu is known for his emphasis on unity and discipline. He has fostered a team-first mentality that reshapes the players’ mindset both on and off the field. At the forefront of this resurgence are Seniors Roy Ma’afala, Titan Lacaden, and Junior Quarterback Nainoa Lopes—three standout athletes who have been instrumental in the team’s turnaround.
Ma’afala, a defensive powerhouse, embodies the “gritty mindset” that defines this year’s team. “This year’s biggest difference is everyone is like a family. We all have the same gritty mindset, and we all have a great work ethic,” shares Ma’afala. “We have one goal that we all want to achieve, and it’s to bring back the Koa Head to Saint Louis.”
Ma’afala’s leadership on defense has been key, but he’s quick to acknowledge there’s room for growth. “It feels good to be playing alongside my brothers and for us to be playing [as] well as we are right now,” he explains. “But I don’t think we’re even near the best we can be as a defensive unit, and there is definitely more work to be done.”
Similarly, Lopes plays a critical role in the team’s transformation. As the starting quarterback, he leads by example and fosters trust within the squad. “As the starting quarterback, my role is to lead by example and instill confidence in the team,” shares Lopes. “Building trust and chemistry with the team is key.” His leadership has helped solidify the team’s offense and has been vital in building the camaraderie that defines this season.
Lacaden, a versatile player, has also been pivotal in the team’s resurgence. “I think myself and the team are motivated more than ever now,” Lacaden explains.. “Having a fresh start this year with new coaches has helped our team become unified.” Reflecting on the team’s collective hunger, he adds, “We are hungrier than ever, not only because we missed states the past two years, but because we know we have the team to dominate this year.”
The combination of strong leadership, individual drive, and a renewed sense of unity has transformed the Crusaders from underdogs to contenders. With their sights set on bringing the Koa Head back to Kalaepōhaku, the team is more focused than ever on achieving their goal.
