The Officials wrestling tournament is approaching as wrestlers from Saint Louis are focused on preparation and getting their minds right as they get ready to compete. For these athletes, success does not only happen on the mat, but from mental toughness and daily training.
Senior wrestler and three-time state champion Hunter Berger emphasizes the importance of confidence when wrestling tough opponents. When asked how he handles pressure before going into a match, Berger said, “I trust in my training and my abilities.” Despite his experience, he knows that opponents often try to gain a mental edge. He said that psychological warfare is one of the biggest challenges he faces during tournaments.

Rising wrestler Sky Ma mentions that he has made many improvements this season. When asked about his plan on dominating at the upcoming tournament, he responded with, “My speed on my shots and the ability to get to the legs quicker.” When matches get difficult and all odds seem against him, Sky says that he turns to motivation as a way to keep going. “I think about my mom and all my friends watching on the side,” he said.
Another wrestler, Stanley Okimoto, says he has clear goals set heading into Officials. When asked about his goal, he simply said, “To win it.” Rather than looking too far ahead, Stanley plans to take things one match at a time. “By wrestling one match at a time, I will be able to stay focused and motivated,” he explained. Stanley also mentions that having experienced teammates has also played a crucial role in his improvement over the years. He says that “Having experienced teammates allows me to be pushed every day outside of competition.
As the tournament draws closer, these wrestlers are relying on motivation and team support to guide them. With all these wrestlers having clear minds and set goals, they are ready to step on the mat and compete at a high level.
