The Fastest Game On Two Feet

Joe Lyons

Quick. Physical. Strategic. Introducing lacrosse, the fastest sport on two feet. The game played by North Americans for hundreds of years is soon going to be available to Saint Louis students in grades 6-12. Head coach, and economics teacher, Mr. Keogh, is looking for eager students to join the inaugural Crusader Lacrosse Club.

Mr. Keogh is no stranger to lacrosse. With 33 years of practice, including 4 years at Fairport High School and another 4 at Ithaca College, he knows what he’s talking about when he says that “Saint Louis is the perfect place for a thriving lacrosse program.” Not to mention Mr. Keogh has years of coaching at the University of New Haven, Monroe Community College, and even Kapolei High School.

First-timers can expect a sport that doesn’t discriminate by size, and consists of elements from Soccer, Basketball, and Hockey. Unlike other sports, “Lax” is as enjoyable to practice as it is to play. Hour-long clinics are going to begin late this fall, once a week, to give players some experience prior to the 2018 spring season. A lacrosse season runs from February to April, and consists of practices three nights a week, with games at Kapiolani Park on Sunday afternoons. Mr. Keogh urges middle and high school students to “give lacrosse a try,” and reminds students that no one at Saint Louis has lax experience, which will put us all at the same level to begin with. He is confident that with dedication, commitment, and hard work, Crusaders can put up a strong fight against Punahou, Hawaii Prep, Konawaena, and the Honolulu Sharks.
