The United Nations Conflict

The Flag of The United Nations

In the recent UN conference meeting, the members of the United Nations came together to discuss the topic of the coronavirus and what they were going to do about it. Due to several accusations, they broke out in a very heated argument as to the causes and the solutions that were leading to even more problems. The argument was mainly between the United States , China, and Russia. They were told by the UN chief that they failed in handling the coronavirus situation. The chief made a statement proving his point by telling them of the insane death toll with the even bigger number of people affected or diagnosed with the virus. He followed up by saying that he fears the worst if the world handles the climate the same way it handled this pandemic.

The United Nations Conference Meeting

It was stated that this pandemic was a test of international cooperation,  however, they simply failed the task, and to prove his point, President Donald Trump made his claim to demand action against China for spreading the “plague” of the coronavirus. With the U.S. being the nation with the highest number of cases of coronavirus, they accused Beijing for a lack of transparency that worsened the outbreak which in turn they denied the accusation. A point Ambassador Zhang Jun made added to the fact that we can’t keep the virus under control by mentioning that the U.S. is isolated and has the most advanced medical technology yet still has the highest number of cases. From this point on, both representatives from the U.S. and China continued to argue for some time until UN Ambassador Kelly Craft interrupted.

Ambassador Craft went on about how she was disgusted at the contents of the discussion as she brought up how the council was a disappointment for focusing more on political grudges rather than the issue they were supposed to be addressing that being Covid-19. Through all these arguments, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov pointed out that the pandemic “deepened differences” between countries and saw it as a way people settled scores with an undesirable government instead of coming together to solve the problem at hand.

Following that, one of China’s top diplomats, Wang Yi, said we needed better cooperation, but Trump thought of the opposite. Trump decided to pull the U.S. from the Geneva based World Health Organization but his assertion was denied by the WHO. Over time, multiple representatives, ambassadors, and diplomats agreed and stated that they needed to make changes to the cooperation going on between countries. The ending of the conference was a series of speeches from representatives that were pre written in which there were still some more attacks towards each other. Specifically Trump’s accusations on China, but with that, we reached the conclusion of the covid 19 UN conference meeting.
